Shawl Weaving Artisan - Winding and Warping
Setup and operations of pirn winding machine
Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• fix the cone on pirn winding machine
• fix the pirn on winding spindle
• starting and stopping of pirn winding machine.
Requirements
Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments Materials
• Pirn winding machine - 1 No • Cone bobbin - 1 No.
• Empty Pirn - as reqd.
PROCEDURE
TASK 1: Fix the cone on pirn winding machine
1 Turn the machine powered off to avoid accidental 8 Pass the yarn through the machine’s thread guides,

distributed evenly on the pirn and the cone is stable.
7 Avoid over tightening, as it can damage the cone or
holder. 14 If any issues persist, remove the cone and repeat
the process carefully.
TASK 2: Fix the pirn on winding spindle
1 Check the pirn for any damage or defects. 9 Then pass the yarn through the guides, tensioners,
and eyelets of the machine.
2 Ensure the pirn is clean and free of old yarn or
residue. 10 Secure the yarn to the pirn’s tip using a small knot or
wrap it around the pirn tip.
3 Check the spindle for cleanliness and ensure it is
free from debris, lint, or worn-out parts. 11 Set the machine speed appropriate for the type of
yarn and pirn to avoid uneven winding or damage.
4 Hold the pirn in alignment with the spindle.
12 Rotate the spindle manually to ensure the yarn flows
